FAQ
How does automatic location capture work?
Journary captures your location in the background at a set interval — there are no start/stop buttons to remember. Just live your life and Journary quietly builds your history. The free tier captures every 2 hours; Pro lets you choose any interval from 1 minute to 24 hours.
Will Journary drain my battery?
No. Journary uses iOS’s energy-efficient location APIs and only records a point at your chosen interval rather than tracking continuously. On the free 2-hour interval the impact is negligible. Even on higher-frequency Pro settings, the app is designed to be light on battery.
Does my data ever leave my phone?
Your location history is stored on your iPhone and syncs only through your own private iCloud (CloudKit). It never touches our servers. We have no backend that sees your data, no analytics, and no tracking. Only you and your Apple devices can access your history.
Is Journary private compared to Google Timeline?
Yes — that is the whole point. Google Timeline stores your movements on Google’s servers, where they can be mined for advertising. Journary keeps everything on-device and in your private iCloud. There is no server, no profile, and no ad business built on your location.
What's free and what's Pro?
Free includes automatic location capture every 2 hours, image export in any aspect ratio, and data export (GPX, KML, JSON). Pro unlocks high-frequency capture (1 minute to 24 hours) and video export with all render modes and aspect ratios.
Is Pro a subscription?
No. Pro is a one-time purchase of $29.99 for lifetime access — no subscriptions, no recurring charges. One purchase, forever. Compare that to subscription apps charging $50–$80 every year.
How do trip videos work?
Pro turns any journey into a cinematic, shareable video. Watch your route animate across the map in two modes: user-centric, where the camera follows you, and map-centric, a bird’s-eye view of you moving across the map. Export in square (Instagram), portrait (TikTok/Reels), or landscape (YouTube).
Can I export my data?
Yes. You own your data and can export your full route history in standard open formats — GPX, KML, and JSON — on every tier, including free. Image export is also available for free; video export is a Pro feature.
How does Apple Health integration work?
If you opt in, Journary connects to Apple Health to enrich your days with steps, floors climbed, walking/running distance, and elevation. Health data is read on-device only, stays on your iPhone, and is never uploaded anywhere.
Troubleshooting
- Reopen Journary and try again — most hiccups clear on a fresh launch.
- Make sure you’re on the latest version from the App Store.
- Not seeing recent locations? Check that Location Services and “Always” permission are enabled for Journary in iOS Settings.
- Restart your iPhone and retry.
